Bayern unbreachables in charge

RSC Anderlecht not only have to make history to overturn a 5-0 deficit at FC Bayern München and reach the UEFA Cup quarter-finals – they must also break down a defence described by Oliver Kahn as "the best" he has played with.

Praise from Kahn
Even Brazilian defender Breno, signed for a reported €12.3m in the winter from São Paulo FC, has failed to win a place in a back four that is unbreached in three March matches and has conceded just eleven goals in 23 Bundesliga games. Such resilience puts them on course to beat Werder Bremen's 1987/88 record of 22 goals against. Goalkeeper Kahn said: "This is the best Bayern defence I have played with." Full-back Marcell Jansen added: "We have a certain aggressiveness as a team and even our strikers work for the defence."

Relaxed
This allows Ottmar Hitzfeld to use one holding midfielder rather than two as had been custom, with the coach explaining: "We are more solid in defence and are set up to win European games too." They proved it in style in Belgium last Thursday when registering a crushing first-leg victory. Hitzfeld, accordingly, can now give a run-out to fringe players such as Toni Kroos, Jan Schlaudraff, José Ernesto Sosa and Andreas Ottl, while also handing a starting debut to Breno. Luca Toni is suspended, Zé Roberto ill and Bastian Schweinsteiger doubtful with a bruised thigh. Bayern defeated Karlsruher SC 2-0 on Saturday.

Anderlecht absentees
If Anderlecht's task was not mammoth enough, defender Nicolás Pareja misses the trip to Munich because of a knee problem, colleague Marcin Wasilewski is banned while midfielder Thomas Chatelle has a stomach injury. Moreover, among the 17-man squad picked by coach Ariel Jacobs, Jan Polák and Mbark Boussoufa are struggling with thigh and toe complaints sustained in Sunday's 2-0 win at R. Charleroi SC. That is even without considering long-term absentees Mbo Mpenza, Jonathan Legear and Nicolas Frutos, or ineligible winter signings Stanislav Vlček and Luigi Pieroni.

Hope diminished

General manager Herman Van Holsbeeck said: "For Anderlecht, our next league match against [KSV] Roeselare is now just as important as the one in Munich. Last week we conceded three goals too many to travel with much realistic ambition. However, I think the coach and the players do not want to suffer the same result as in the first leg."

Germany to bid Kahn fond farewell

The German Football Association (DFB) and FC Bayern München will pay tribute to Oliver Kahn by staging a farewell match for the goalkeeper on 2 September to mark his retirement at the end of this season.

'Great night'
The game between the German national team and the Bundesliga champions will be held at the Fußball Arena München to commemorate an exceptional career for both club and country. "This will not be an easy moment for me, to really call it quits after 20 years, but I am looking forward to 2 September and it will be a great night," the 38-year-old said.

Key figure
Kahn has won seven Bundesliga titles and five German Cups with Bayern, whom he joined in the summer of 1994 from Karlsruher SC. He has played 549 Bundesliga games, more than any other goalkeeper, and was also part of the Bayern side which won the UEFA Champions League in 2001 and the UEFA Cup in 1996. Kahn, who now shares the Bayern goalkeeping duties with Michael Rensing, captained Germany from 2002 to 2004 and was a key figure for his country as they finished second and third at the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups.

'Extraordinary'
"We are glad to be able to give Oliver the goodbye he deserves after 20 years as an outstanding professional," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said. "He has done extraordinary things for the DFB, Bayern, Karlsruher SC and German football in general." DFB president Theo Zwanziger added: "Oliver Kahn is an outstanding footballer and an extraordinary man. The 2002 World Cup, when he was elected best player, will forever be remembered for his one-of-a-kind performances."

EURO coaches gather in Austrian capital

The head coaches of the 16 nations who will compete at UEFA EURO 2008™ are expected to attend the finalists' workshop in Vienna on Wednesday and Thursday, in preparation for June's final tournament in Austria and Switzerland. Some 130 guests are expected in the Austrian capital, with each delegation potentially sending up to eight members including the president, general secretary, head coach, ticketing officer, manager and team doctor.

Presentations
Wednesday will feature general presentations, with group meetings about specific topics scheduled for the following day. The most important topics being addressed are tournament guidelines, services and facilities available to the participating teams, organisational activities of UEFA and Euro 2008 SA, accommodation, transport, accreditation, pitches, match operations, medical services, TV and media issues and anti-doping.

Anti-Doping Charter
All 16 associations will sign an Anti-Doping Charter in a ceremony at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion – the venue for the final on 29 June. The charter pledges that the anti-doping campaign will be given full backing by all of the countries taking part. Other events heralding the EURO tournament will take place at the workshop, with details to be unveiled during the course of the two days in Vienna. Eight venues – Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Salzburg and Vienna (Austria) and Basel, Berne, Geneva and Zurich (Switzerland) – are staging UEFA EURO 2008™ between 7 and 29 June.

EURO stars shining in Golden Shoe race

Several of the players expected to star at UEFA EURO 2008™ are looking in prime form for the June finals as they make the running for this season's ESM Golden Shoe, an award for the leading goalscorer among the European leagues.

Ronaldo top
Leading the table, for which each goal is weighted depending on the strength of the specific national league, is Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo. He showed ability in front of goal with eight strikes in qualifying, good enough for fourth overall, and Ronaldo has now struck 21 times in the 2007/08 Premier League for Manchester United FC, putting him two points ahead of Sevilla FC's Brazilian forward Luis Fabiano.

Form players
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar opened his competitive senior international account for the Netherlands in October against Slovenia and has not stopped scoring since, his 26 goals for AFC Ajax leaving him third in the Golden Shoe standings. Spain's Fernando Torres has struck seven times in Liverpool FC's last three league games to take his total to 19 and move up to joint-fourth place, while France starlet Karim Benzema's 17 goals in Olympique Lyonnais colours leave him sixth. Sharing eighth position are two dark horses for UEFA EURO 2008™ selection who are leading the way in Serie A: Juventus forward David Trezeguet, who has fallen out of favour for France, and Genoa CFC's Marco Borriello, fresh from his Italy debut last month against Portugal.

Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking have two as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.

A player cannot first play in a summer league (eg Norway) and then in a winter league (eg Spain) and combine the points total for each season.

Eggimann on the move after EURO

Switzerland central defender Mario Eggimann is hoping to enjoy a summer to remember after it was announced that he will be leaving Karlsruher SC for Hannover 96 in a €1m deal at the end of the season.

'Really improved
The 27-year-old moved to Germany from Swiss club FC Aarau in 2002 and has been a key figure in sixth-placed KSC's ascent up the Bundesliga this term, scoring four goals in 22 starts. His club coach Edmund Becker said recently: "Mario has made real strides this season. He has really improved in building moves, avoiding unnecessary fouls and his defensive headers." Eggimann, whose will join Hannover once his Karlsruher contract expires on 30 June, made his Switzerland debut in a 2-1 victory against Chile in September and has since added three caps to his collection, raising hopes that he will be selected for UEFA EURO 2008™on home soil. The co-hosts are next in friendly action on 26 March, when they meet fellow finalists Germany in Basel.

Finalists prepare for friendly tests

With UEFA EURO 2008™ less than three months away, the forthcoming round of friendly internationals on 26 March represents a crucial opportunity for the 16 finalists to fine-tune their preparations.

Enticing fixtures
Several enticing fixtures have been arranged as the countdown to the big kick-off in Basel on 7 June begins in earnest. Co-hosts Switzerland, who play the Czech Republic in Group A in the tournament's opening game, test their credentials by entertaining one of the favourites, Germany, in Basel. Jakob Kuhn's side are looking to return to winning ways having been beaten by England last month, but could find the going tough against the three-time European champions who disposed of Switzerland's fellow joint-hosts Austria 3-0 in their last outing.

Dutch challenge
Austria, drawn alongside Germany, Croatia and Poland in Group B, face an equally stern examination against the Netherlands in Vienna. Marco van Basten claimed his team were "beautiful to watch" in the 3-0 defeat of Croatia a month ago, and the Dutch coach will be hoping for another encouraging display as he prepares for the tussle with France, Italy and Romania in Group C. Croatia's first match since losing striker Eduardo da Silva to a broken leg is a testing trip to Scotland, while Poland – winners against the Czech Republic last time out – take on the United States.

Spain defeat
If the Dutch impressed in February's friendlies, Raymond Domenech's France are in need of a boost against England in Paris, having been beaten by Spain in their previous fixture. Les Bleus open their summer campaign against a Romanian side that finished above the Netherlands in qualifying, yet slumped to a disappointing defeat by Israel in their most recent friendly. Victor Piţurcă will be counting on an improvement when Romania play Russia in Bucharest on 26 March. Former winners Italy, meanwhile, travel to Spain on the same evening.

Glamorous encounter
The Spaniards have struggled to assert themselves at the UEFA European Championships since lifting the trophy in 1964, but confidence is high after Joan Capdevila's goal saw off France in their meeting on 6 February and they will be hopeful of progressing from a section that includes Greece, Sweden and Russia. The resurgent Greeks prepare for the defence of their crown by playing Portugal, the side they defeated to win UEFA EURO 2004™, in Dusseldorf while Sweden face a glamourous encounter with Brazil in London. Elsewhere, Group A contenders the Czech Republic and Turkey play host to Denmark and Belarus respectively.
